Author Visit
Sandra Opheim is available in classrooms through the author
visit program. The author shares her love of reading and writing
with the participants. She is a Minnesota licensed elementary teacher
with middle school English endorsement.
Each author visit includes the folowing:
- Up to four classroom visits teaching a variety of writing techniques, characterization, and evaluation using Whose Hat is That?
- Autographed books for each child.
- Lunch with the author. The author will eat school lunch with the students.
The author visits can be tailored to meet your school needs.
Standard Rate - $800.00 plus mileage. This is based on 120 students. Rates are subject to change.

HOW CAN YOU FUND AN AUTHOR VISIT?
Many schools pay for author in residence programs through local grants from civic groups.
LESSON IDEAS FOR TEACHERS
1)Careers - Use this story to introduce different community helpers and their jobs. Discuss the importance of each job in your community. Invite a real nurse, police
officer, postal worker, baker, or fireman to speak in your classroom.
2) Character Education - The main character displays character qualities such as kindness, honesty, hard work, being persistent, and friendship. Discuss the definitions of these qualities, why are they important, and how you demonstrate each.
3) Rhyming - Locate the words that rhyme throughout the story. Try rewriting the text for one or two pages. Be sure to include a new rhyme.
4) Character Analysis - Discuss the animals in the story. Do you think they were good choices for their jobs? Explain. What other animals would you choose to be a nurse, fireman, baker, police officer, and postal worker?
